Safety/equipment science.

Today I am going to be talking about some safety rules and some equipment used in a science lab.

Safety Rules:

  1. No running in the science lab.
  2. No food or drink in the science lab.
  3. No tasting any of the food used for an experiment.
  4. Put your bags underneath a table or in a safe place so no one trips over them.
  5. If you break something make sure to tell a teacher and clean it up.
Equipment:

  1. Beaker, is use to carry liquids and also to measure mL
  2. Funnel, is used to Channel liquids.
  3. beaker tongs, are used for caring hot beakers and lids.
  4. Test tube, is also used to hold liquids like the beaker.
  5. Bunsen, is used to heat liquids.

Hurumanu Science 2040

Today in science we watched a documentary called 2040. The documentary was about the good things about global warming and climate change.

What are two thing you learnt?
I learnt about a box called a solar share it is a solar powered box that you can buy and connect it to your neighbours solar panel or to anyone's solar panel instead of you having to get a solar panel.

I also learnt about how much meat we are eating and how much meat we should be eating.  We should be eating lease meat and more vegetables.

What surprised me?
How many different ways people are trying to prevent  global warming and climate change.

What I would like to see in 2040?
I would like to see self driven cars/electric cars, plants growing on the top of buildings and our environment being looked after.

Hurumanu Art

Today in Art hurumanu we have been making some clay characters for our stop motion that we are
going to be making.

The characters are a whale,shark,2 fish a water snake and a octopus.

I made the shark because the shark is going to be the bully and the fish is the one getting bullied.
Then the whale Is going to come along and tell the Shark to stop bullying and all the other sea creatures are just going to be swimming around/past.

One of the challenges is making the sea creatures because it's hard getting the creatures into the right shape.
Here is a photo of what Paea and myself have made.

Stationery fundraiser

Stationery fundraiser
How are we going to spread the message to the community?  We have made DLOs to get the message around the school.

Who do you think will get involved?  I think the teachers and the people that have empty stationery to put in the boxes.

What should we do with the donation money that we received from Terra Cycle?
I think we should use the money to get more stationery for the school or do some stuff with the money to help the community.

How many kgs do you predict we will collect?
I think we will collect up to 10-15 kgs of empty stationery.

Science

Aim: To find out which colour attracts the suns heat.

Hypothesis: I think that black will tract the most sun.

Materials:

  1. White cup
  2.  Black cup
  3.  Silver cup
  4. cut black bag
  5. white paper
  6. Heater
  7. thermometer

Steps

  1. Get your materials.
  2. Put the Tinfoil cup onto the tinfoil cut piece, put the white cup on the white piece of paper and put the black cup on the black cut piece.
  3.  Pure water into your cups.
  4.   Then turn on your heater.
  5. Then every 15 minutes check the temperature.

Here is what your materials should look like when their set up.
There is the black cup and cut up bag on the right, There's the tinfoil cup and the cut up piece of tinfoil in the middle and the White cup and white piece of paper on the left hand side .  At the back is the light/heater heating up the cups/water.

Findings:

Cup 1
White
Cup 2
Black
Cup 3
Tinfoil

Conclusion: As you can see this experiment we found out that black can attract the most heat out of silver and white.

Climate Chaos Science

This week in science we learnt about the water cycle.

Here is a Little table of what materials we need for this experiment and the steps on how to do this experiment .

Climate Chaos
Written by:Blake

Title

Water Cycle

Purpose

The purpose learn about the water cycle.

Materials

Experiment one
  • Get one large zip lock bag
  • A black permanent marker
  • Blue food colouring
  • Water
  • Sellotape
Experiment two
  • Get one large zip lock bag
  • A black permanent marker
  • Blue food colouring
  • Water
  • Sellotape
  • Litmus paper
  • Baking soda

Steps

              Experiment one
Get your zip lock bag and draw a picture of the water cycle.

Then go to Mr Palmer and he will put water and blue food colouring into your bag.

Then get two pieces of tape and stick one to the bottom of your bag and one on the top.

After that you have to put the bag on a window were it will get sun.

             Experiment
  •  Do the same thing you did in experiment one but the only two changes are you will add baking soda and you will also put a little piece of  litmus paper on the corner of your bag.

Conclusion

Experiment one
For experiment one I think that the water will stay the same colour.
Experiment two
For experiment two the water will change into clean/clear water.

Procedure

1. Come and collect all the materials from Mr Palmer.

2.Set up the lights, bottles, thermometer and bungs.

3.Mr Palmer adds baking soda mix with 100 ml of water.

4.Wait for five minutes and start recording the temperature.
