Science Experiments

This week in science we have done 3 experimets. The Glowing Splint experiment, the Lime Water, and the Pop Test experiment.

Glowing Splint
When we did the Glowing Splint experiment we had to light the splint with a Bunsen Burner.  Then we let the tip burn for a couple of seconds then blew it out.  The next thing we did was put the smouldering splint into a test tube that had Hydrogen peroxide and Manganesse Dioxide in it.  These two chemicals together produced Oxygen.  The splint relit because it was exposed to the oxygen in the test tube.  This result proved that the gas in the test tube was oxygen.

Pop Test
For the Pop Test we wanted to test for Hydrogen Gas. We tested this by putting 2ml of Hydrochloric acid into a test with a piece of Magnesium metal.  When we combined the two together the test tube started to heat up showing us that there was a reaction. Then we covered the test tube with another test tube to make sure no gas escaped.  After this we lit a wooden splint and tilted the top test tube then inserted the splint which caused a pop sound. This proved that the gas that was trapped was Hydrogen Gas.

Bob Geldof

In the 1970s Bob Geldof was a famous singer and also the lead singer for the boomtown Rats.  He was famous for being the frontman singer in the boomtown Rats band and also for his most popular song "I don't like Mondays".  To let people know about a school shooting that happened in a San Diego school.  Bob Geldof was recognised for his activism, mostly anti-poverty efforts concerning Africa.

Midge Ure was a Scottish musician who was involved in several bands.  The band he was most recognised in was Ultravox, he was also the leadsinger in ultravox.  His most famous song is "Do they know it's Christmas". During the 80s this song was the highest selling single in Uk history.  Midge Ure and Bob Geldof together they created Live Aid were they gathered artists all over the world to play in front of a crowd of 72,000 people.  This event raised about $125 million dollars to go towards Ethiopian Famine.

Parihaka

Today in Social Studies I will be talking about the the song of Parihaka.

What is the main message of the song.  The main message in this song is telling us that Te Whiti will live forever.  What this means is that Te Whiti and his story will never be forgotten.

What line explains their passive resistance.  The spirit of non violence.

What makes this event significant?  This is significant because it inspired other leaders around the world. Like Martin Luther King Jr and Mahatma Gandhi.

Atomic Science: Periodic Table.

Today in Science I will be talking about the Periodic Table

What does the periodic show us?

The Periodic table shows us all the elements and their weight mass. It is in order from the amount of atomic numbers and electrons it has.

Alkaline Metals

What is a Alkaline Metal?

The Alkaline metal is in the first column in the periodic table.  Alkaline Metals reacts with anything because it doesn't have enough electrons in its outer shell.

They are lithium (Li), sodium (Na), potassium (K), rubidium (Rb), caesium(Cs), and francium (Fr).

What did I see during the experiment?  When the Alkaline Metal was added to the cold water and the universal indicator.  It was going around in a circle then it caught on fire.  It caught on fire because the metal only has one electron in its outer shell so the metal reacted to get rid of its electron.

Wananga Reflection

Today I will be talking about what I have done in P.E.  For the past couple of weeks we have been practising for athletics.  In the first 30 minutes of P.E Mr let me and a couple other student practice high jump while some people went outside and practised sprinting.  When I was doing high jump I could only jump over the bar when it was 1m 30cm high.  Then after doing high jump I went outside and practised doing sprints with the blocks for the first time.  Then when we had a race and the loser had to do 10 push ups.

Music Through Time

In Social Studies we have been studying music through time.

Spirituals are different types of genre. For example soul, RnB, Rap, rock and roll and gospel.  Spirituals were used by slaves since 1600-1895 and are still used today.  Slaves used spirituals to communicate and to help them find a way to attack the slave owners or to find a way to escape.

Who is Harriet Tubman?

Harriet Tubman was a slave that helped thousands of slaves escape. She lead the slaves through secret pathways called the Underground railroads, to get them out of the slave state.

This song is called Wade In The Water.  The hidden message in this song. Is to get in the water when escaping. So the slave owners dog doesn't sniff you or the trail that your on.

Maze Runner Governments.

Today in Film Study we had to make a poster on the governments in the maze runner.

I learnt the 4 governments an oligarchy, aristocracy, monarchy, and democracy.

What is one thing I wont to know? One thing I want to know is what type of governments the other characters in the Maze Runner are.
